BED COVER A bed cover consisting of a main section having longitudal and transverse dimensions long enough to cover the upper surface of the bed mattress and drape therefrom to the ground from the foot and sides thereof, and a pocket fastened to the underside of the main section at a point where the drape over the foot begins. The pocket is fastened so that its opened end runs across the transverse dimension of the main section and is sufficiently wide to accept the foot edge of the mattress with sufficient surplus space to accept the feet of the occupant of the bed.
Assistant Examiner: Calvert; Andrew M. Attorney, Agent or Firm: What I claim is: 1. A mattress bedcovering comprising a main section covering said mattress and a pocket fitted over the end of said mattress to simultaneously accept the feet of persons lying on said mattress while holding said main section of said mattress; said main section having a center portion dimensioned to conform to the sleeping surface of said mattress and draping portions extending from two sides and the foot end of said center portion, the distance from the sleeping surface of said mattress to the floor, wherein said pocket is shaped from a rectangular blank in which acute angle notches are cut in adjacent corners in a first long side of said blank and the sides of each of said notches are joined together to form a blousy four-sided open prism having a back, a bottom and two side panels and wherein said pocket is fastened to said main section by joining the perimeter of said back and side panels to the foot end of said main section at the boundary with said draping portions. 2. A bedcovering in accordance with claim 1 wherein the length of said back panel is made equal to the width of said mattress and wherein the edge in the long side of said pocket blank opposite to said first long side is fastened to said main section so that said back panel runs along said transverse foot side of said main section and said side panels run perpendicularly from said transverse foot side toward the end opposite to said transverse foot side. This invention relates to bed covers and more particularly bed covers held securely in place and fashioned to serve the dual function of a top sheet or blanket and a bedspread. It has long been recognized that a need exists for sheets which facilitate the task of making up a bed with a minimum of effort and a pleasant appearance. In the past this need has been met by various arrangements such as fitted sheets in which the corners of a rectangular blank are sewn together to form a pocket that runs around the perimeter of the blank and which fits snugly over the corners of a mattress, and by semi fitted sheets, in which a pocket is sewn at one end to accept the foot of the mattress. Illustrative of such prior art arrangements are U.S. Pat. No. 2,605,483 granted to Ridenhour, U.S. Pat. No. 1,865,329 granted to McHorter and U.S. Pat. No. 2,679,056 granted to Simpson. While these arrangements solve the problem of securing and maintaining the bed cover in position on the mattress so that the bed may be made up with a minimum of time and labor, they are spartan in appearance and require an additional covering such as a bedspread if the bed is to have a neat appearance with a covering draping to the floor from the sides and foot thereof. It is a general object of my invention to provide a bed cover which overcomes the aforesaid disadvantages of the prior art. Briefly, in accordance with the principles of my invention I provide a bed cover such as a decoratively patterned top sheet, blanket or the like having a main section which is long enough and wide enough to cover the top surface of a mattress and drape over the sides and foot of the bed in the fashion of a bed spread. To this section there is joined a pocket fastened so that its opening runs transversely across the main section along a line where the main section bends down over the foot of the bed. The pocket is constructed to accept and envelop the end of a mattress while simultaneously providing enough room to accept the feet of the occupants of the bed. When the pocket is positioned over the foot end of the mattress, vertical and transverse displacement therebetween is prevented and the main section functions as a blanket used to cover the occupant of the bed. When the occupant gets out of bed the head end of the main section may be thrown to one side, but the foot end remains securely in place with a neat drape hanging to the floor therefrom. If, thereafter, the occupant wishes to make the bed, it is necessary only to pull the head end of the main section towards and over a pillow. When this is done the cover will then drape neatly from the sides of the mattress and the entire bed will look neat with the appearance of a conventional bedspread. Further features, objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent upon consideration of the following detailed description in conjunction with the drawing in which: FIG. 1 is a bottom perspective view of the main section and pocket with the mattress fitted in place; FIG. 2 is a detailed development layout of the pocket; and FIG. 3 is a partially cut away perspective view of the bed covering in position on a bed. Referring now to the drawing, FIG. 2 shows in detail, a layout of the pocket blank 1 which is joined to the main section 2 of the bed cover. The pocket is formed by cutting acute angle notches 3 in adjacent corners along the long edge of the generally rectangular blank 1. Thereafter, the pocket is formed by joining the edges of each notch 3 in a seam 3'. When this is done a pocket in the general form of a rectangular prism is formed with sides 6, top 7 and back 5 disposed at right angles to each other. Thereafter, the bottom edge 4 of blank 1 is turned at a right angle to the surface of sides 6 and back 5 of blank 1 and fastened in place on main section 2. Pocket 1 is then joined to main section 2 with back 5 and sides 6 positioned equidistant from their facing parallel edges 8, 9 and 10 of main section 2. This distance will be long enough to permit the main section 2 to drape to the ground from the top of the mattress covering the mattress box spring and other supporting structures. On conventional beds the distance will be approximately 17 inches. Main section 2 may be sewn with a hem at each edge and the hems at the foot and head may be larger than the hems sewn on the sides. Consistent with the features and object of my invention, it is possible to leave one edge of main section 2 unhemmed if that edge is a selvage. Also, it is possible to join pocket 1 to main section 2 either by bending edge 4 away from the pocket toward the perimeter of main section 2 or toward the inside of the pocket as shown. And while it is preferable to effect all joining operations by sewing, it is possible to do this by means of gummed tape, snaps or zippers, if it is so desired. In the embodiment shown in the drawing, the bed cover functions as both a top sheet or blanket and a bed spread. As shown in FIG. 3 the foot end of mattress 11 is fitted snugly into pocket 1 of the bed cover, thereby preventing relative displacement therebetween. The foot edge and adjacent side of the bed cover drape down toward the floor from the top surface of mattress 11, concealing box spring 13 and bed frame 14. By reason of the fact that notches 3 were cut at an acute angle into blank 1, the edge of top 7 of pocket 1 blouses above the top of mattress 11 to provide space for the feet of the occupant thereof. By means of the arrangement shown, the bed cover is used to provide warmth to the person or persons sleeping in the bed who, upon rising, are able to easily make the bed with a neat appearance and a minimum of effort. This is done by merely throwing the head portion of the cover to one side in order to permit exit from the bed and thereafter adjusting the head portion over the top of the mattress so that the sides drap therefrom. The head end of main section 2 may be folded around a pillow 15 if desired. The drape from the foot portion never becomes undone unless the entire cover is intentionally removed from the bed by sliding the mattress foot end from the pocket. Thus, the drape from the foot is present at all times and never needs adjustment. It is understood that the above-described arrangements are illustrative of the application of the principles of the invention.
